Spring flower bulbs: Crocuses

Spring-Flowering Bulbs: Crocuses

Crocuses are a hugely popular spring flowering bulb, rivalling tulips and daffodils in popularity. They are widely planted in parks and gardens, usually in massive numbers for a stunningly beautiful effect. Crocuses and snowdrops are some of the earliest blooming bulbs, and lovely harbingers of spring.

Crocuses are native to the Mediterranean region, and belong to the iris (Iridaceae) family. There are over 100 known species of crocus, but only 30 cultivated species, the majority of which flower in early spring in shades of yellow, white, all shade of purple and blue, and bi-colored (usually variegated blue or purple and white). The name Crocus comes from krokus, the Greek word for the spice saffron. Saffron is the dried stigmas of the fall-flowering Crocus sativus.

Planting Crocus Bulbs

As with all spring bulbs, crocuses should be planted in the fall. For best effect, plant the crocus bulbs close together in large groups -- don't be shy! Although they look great as bordering plants, a carpet of 100-200 crocuses has a gorgeous effect, and is a lovely way to ring in the spring flowering season.

Crocus Bulbs

It is important that you plant crocuses -- as well as any other spring flowering bulbs -- in well-drained soil. Soil that is too wet may lead to bulb rot. One charming characteristic of crocus flowers is that they usually only open up in direct sunlight, and they close up when it rains and at night, so select a location for your crocus bulbs where they will have good exposure.

Plant the bulbs 2-3 inches deep, as soon as possible after they are purchased in the fall. If you have to store the bulbs for a longer period of time, be sure to follow our spring bulb storage procedures. As always, avoid undersized, mushy, or diseased looking bulbs -- if purchasing mail order bulbs, be sure to buy from a reputable vendor such as Spring Hill Nursery or Michigan Bulb Company.
